Fireworks triple stray animal count

The Benoni SPCA took in about thrice as many stray animals - compared to most weekends - over the weekend of October 29 / 30.

This followed the celebration of Deepavali, which includes the lighting of fireworks, on Sunday (October 30).

Vicky Finnemore, Benoni SPCA manager, said 13 stray dogs and six stray cats were taken in.

The society usually picks up about three or four dogs and two cats, per weekend.

“There were no reported injuries as a result of the fireworks going off, though we received many calls from the public,” Finnemore added.

“It’s very frustrating, but we can’t enforce the by-laws pertaining to fireworks.”

She said most of the animals were brought in by the same people who’d found them.
