One killed after allegedly making off with truckload of energy drinks

Police recovered a trailer containing energy drinks valued at about R500 000, soon after it was stolen from a property in Brentwood Park on October 26.

A local security company’s officer allegedly shot one of the suspects.

Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said about five people arrived on the Van Dyk Road premises in a VW, a Mercedes-Benz and a truck.

They held up a group of about nine long-distance truck drivers at the truck stop at about 9.30pm.

“They woke up one truck driver at gunpoint and he was ordered to go and show them a trailer loaded with energy drinks,” said Sekele.

Sekele said the gunmen woke up the remaining truck drivers, tied them up with ropes and took their cash and cellphones.

They hooked up a trailer containing the energy drinks and fled from the property in the three vehicles in which they arrived.

The spokesperson said a security company got word of the crime and discovered the vehicle on Heidelberg Road.

The security company shot at the suspects, injuring two of them.

One of the men later died in hospital, while the second one is still in the Far East Rand Hospital.

An inquest docket has been opened into the death of one of the suspects and a case of business robbery was also opened.
