Fifty three arrested for allegedly attacking ‘gang’ members

Fifty three residents of Etwatwa have been arrested after two people, who are suspected gang members, were beaten to death and their bodies left near a railway line on Monday night (October 24).

The accused are expected to appear at the Benoni Magistrate’s Court tomorrow (Thursday October 27).

They face charges of public violence, possession of dangerous weapons and assault with the intent to cause grievous bodily harm.

Police haven’t linked the residents to the death of the two alleged gang members who were beaten to death.

Gauteng SAPS spokesperson, Lieut-Col Lungelo Dlamini, said the residents were arrested after they allegedly attacked two people believed to be members of the “OVL”gang yesterday (October 25).

“Residents armed with dangerous weapons were on a manhunt for OVL members, who are believed to be involved in violent crimes in the area,” said Dlamini.

“At this stage, investigations are continuing to establish if the victims were members of the gang or not.”

Two other people were seriously injured after the accused persons allegedly beat them up.

The injured were taken to a local hospital for treatment.

Police have warned community members against taking the law into their own hands.

They encouraged residents to report crimes to the police.

Police are currently monitoring the situation.
