No improvement to Styx Road Cemetery

The Styx Road Cemetery in Actonville is yet to be restored to an appropriate condition and cleaned up following inquiries dating back over two years.

Many trees, shrubs and weeds are still growing from the graves and concealing the tombstones.

The City Times published two articles in March and then in April of 2014 following notification from now Ward 29 councillor, Haseena Ismail.

“Since 2014 we have been working with the community in Actonville, urging the metro to maintain the Styx Road Cemetery,” Ismail said.

She said the walling around the cemetery is still shoddy, allowing illegal activities to be conducted and people to pass through the cemetery as they please.

“This cemetery is over 100 years old; it is supposed to be one of the metro’s priorities, as it is a place where many heroes and heroines of the community have been buried,” said the councillor.

The municipality had not replied to questions at the time of going to print.
