Ready for any emergency

The Kleinfontein Hospital (near present day Snake Road) was founded in September 1904 and was, at the time, only for the benefit of Kleinfontein and Van Ryn Deep European male mineworkers and officials.

Changes were made in the constitution and, in 1914, the committee opened a new ward for the treatment of women and children, including maternity cases for mineworkers’ wives and families.

The hospital had up-to-date appliances for sterilising instruments for the operating theatre on the East Rand, and many major operations were carried out at any hour.

The hospital was also prepared for any emergency, with a special blood bank that was on call 24 hours a day and a lightning plant in the event of a power failure.

A broad verandah ran right around the hospital, so that there was plenty of room for the beds to be placed outside when climate conditions allowed.

In 1943, The Kleinfontein Provident Fund took over administration of the hospital from the Kleinfontein Group Medical Society and ran the hospital under the auspices of the Mines Benefit Society.

Shortly afterwards, it was decided to make it an open hospital catering for members of the public as well.
