Woman starts search for mother after five decades

A woman is searching for her biological mother, whom, she believes. might reside in Benoni.

Jane* was adopted as a baby of 18 months and is now in search of the woman who gave birth to her.

“I want to find out more about my past and familial history,” she said.

“I also want to find out why I was given up for adoption; there are many unanswered questions.”

The Dewald Hattingh Park resident was named Gwendoline Dorothy Phoebe at birth, which occurred on May 9, 1961.

She was born at the Lady Chancellor Maternity Home (later renamed the Mbuya Nehanda Maternity Home), in Harare, Zimbabwe (known at the time as Salisbury, South Rhodesia).

“Initially, I was told she (my mother) had me at the age of 16, but we later discovered she had been 23 and was married at the time,” Jane said.

According to Jane’s birth certificate, her parents’ names were Anthony Malteravers and Elizabeth Jewelle.

Her order of adoption states she was adopted on November 17, 1962.

“We believe my mother lived in Putfontein until more than a year ago, but don’t know where she is at the moment,” Jane said.

“She was born in 1938 and should be around 78.”

Anyone with information can contact Jane on 079 501 1464 or 073 188 8095.

*She did not want to be identified by her surname.
