Garland celebrates 18th birthday

The Garland Ladies Luncheon Club committee celebrated their 18th birthday on September 22, at the Benoni Country Club.

They also welcomed their incoming president for 2016/2017, Margie Kostelac, who introduced a new concept to note all members’ thoughts.

“We will have a suggestion box at every meeting, so that any and every suggestion by the members will be read,” she said.

The outgoing 2015/2016 president, Heather Smithard, welcomed Kostelac into the position after she had thanked the guest speakers who spoke during her term.

She also thanked several members for helping her during her reign, before handing over to Kostelac.

“I want to thank the women for teaching me during this year,” Smithard said.

Kostelac took the stage with a suitcase and an umbrella, symbolising Mary Poppins, who was always there in time of need.

“I know I have big shoes to fill,” she said.

“But I will try my best to be here for you.”

After the induction of the new president, the guest speaker, Sean Brokensha (known as the music guru), had the women tapping their feet as he took them down memory lane, through the ages of music, from the dinner jacket to the leather jacket.

Kostelac said the club meets every fourth Thursday, at the Benoni Country Club.

“The aim of these luncheons is to share business ideas among each other, and to use our ideas and skills to help the community,” she explained.
