Husband, wife allegedly assaulted in apparent road rage incident

A man and his wife were allegedly assaulted by several people in an apparent road rage incident in the Benoni Agricultural Holdings yesterday (September 24).

Alberton resident Sean Coetzee said he and his wife, who he did not directly want to name, were travelling on Elm Road on separate motorbikes when a red robot split them up.

Coetzee said he stopped on the side of the road and waited for his wife to catch up to him.

The husband told the City Times a car, that was travelling behind his wife, went through the intersection and “narrowly, narrowly missed her”.

A few hundred metres later, Coetzee stopped next to the car that went through the intersection, where he spoke to the female driver and male occupant.

“Please, next time stop, you are going to kill somebody,” he told the occupants.

Following this, the male occupant allegedly grabbed his bike’s handlebars, which prompted him and his wife to cross the road, where they stopped.

Coetzee said the car followed them, saying the male pushed him around while the driver attacked his wife.

He said a car carrying three females (it is unclear who they are) then also stopped and started hitting his wife.

Fellow motorists later diffused the situation.

Coetzee said his wife is “very, very shaken up” by the incident and will undergo counselling.

He said he is a very calm person and did not provoke the motorist and her passenger.

Tryna Maritz, Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson, said a case of common assault has been opened.
No arrests have been made.
