Pupil fights to retain his cellphone

A Benoni High School pupil was almost robbed of his cellphone in broad daylight, on his way to a nearby petrol station yesterday (September 22).

The pupil (14) was walking from school, on 14th Avenue, at around 2.30pm, to buy airtime at the garage, when an unknown man approached him from behind.

The youngster said the man tried to distract him by shouting at a woman behind him.

“There was a girl walking behind, at whom he pointed, saying she was his girlfriend, whom he wanted to stab and kill with a knife he said he had,” said the boy.

“He then grabbed my phone from my hand, but I offered to give him the R20 I had for airtime, but he didn’t want it.”

He said the would-be robber then again tried to divert his attention, by asking him questions, but he maintained eye contact and didn’t let go of the man’s hand.

“That’s when a taxi stopped next to us and he focused his attention on it and tried to get in with my phone,” added the teen.

The boy then had a struggle with the man, who’d already forced himself into the taxi.

He grabbed the culprit and fought, “pushing and pulling” at him until he gained possession of his phone.

The taxi, which had passengers, then drove off with the would-be robber inside.
