BCT: What are your fondest memories of Benoni?
KM: Benoni Wheels Day, the bunnies at the Bunny Park and the Benoni Carnivals were great annual events.
I enjoyed being a part of the Natalie Brummer Drum Club and being an aftercare student at Tom Thumb, participating in modern tap and ballet from my junior years.
I really miss the Benoni Carnival, though, as that is when I knew for sure the whole of Ekurhuleni came to my town to experience the fun-filled activities we had.
BCT: You were born in Daveyton, but did not live there all your life; tell us about your life growing up?
KM: I was born in 1985 to a vibrant taxi owner and self-employed, strong-headed mother.
I am the last child of three girls, from parents Sello and Onica Mokgamo.
I attended St Dunstan’s Preparatory from Grade 000 until Grade Three, then I had to move to Farrarmere Primary School and Wordsworth High School, from which I matriculated in 2004.
BCT: You currently live in Crystal Park, for how long have you lived here?
KM: I have lived here for 12 years now.
BCT: Tell us more about your decision to become a ward councillor?
KM: I was interested in bettering, or rather appreciating, women or mothers in my area; I still believe in empowering females.
That is when I was introduced to my friend and sister, Stefanie Ueckermann, and she told me about the opportunity to become a servant of the community.
BCT: You are 31 years old – although you do not look it – are you married and do you have any children?
KM: Yes, I am married to Steven Mahonko and we have two children, who are 10 and five years old.
BCT: Any future plans apart from juggling being a wife, mother and ward councillor?
KM: I would like to grow in my career and serve my community as best I can, by making new friends and learning from those who have the wisdom needed to remain focused in this field.
I have huge shoes to fill and I intend pulling up my socks and fastening my shoe laces tight.
