Resident: Calming measures on Miles Sharp Street are dangerous

A man’s insurer phoned him to ask whether he had been involved in an accident, after a device in his vehicle registered an impact caused by an unexpected speed bump.

Two speed bumps were erected on Miles Sharp Street, Rynfield, opposite the Bunny Park, in the past few months.

Northvilla resident Matt Scrooby said he drove along the road in early September and was not aware of the traffic calming measures on the busy route.

“These speed bumps were only very recently installed, which equates to lifetimes worth of driving down Miles Sharp Street, devoid of any speed bumps,” he added.

“Motorists (particularly residents of the area) are quite simply not accustomed to them.”

Although there are no visible signs of damage to his vehicle, he feels the measures taken to alert motorists to the bumps are not sufficient, saying the area is poorly lit at night, the bumps are not adequately marked and that the signs do not conform to the required standard.

“Did we consider the potential for motor accidents to occur as a direct consequence of poorly marked speed bumps?” Scrooby asked.

“It would be so easy for one vehicle to plough into the back of another as a result of the leading vehicle having to slam on brakes suddenly.

“It is my contention that these speed bumps were extremely ill-conceived and are, in fact, counter to practical safety.”

When the City Times visited the area on Monday morning, there were two signs next to each bump; a large sign in front of each one and the bumps were painted.

Scrooby said, on September 8, that the paint was fading and he feels the municipality “should do more than what is expected”.

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality did not respond to questions concerning the matter by the set deadline.
