Ward 25 councillor loves Benoni

Although Ward 25's Clr Pieter Henning lives in Kempton Park, he is still very involved with the community of Benoni.

BCT: What makes Benoni so important to you?

PH: It used to be the Jewel of the East and all my children attended Benoni High School.

I am actually not a Benoni boy; I grew up in the old Eastern Transvaal (now days called Mpumalanga), where I went to school at Middelburg Technical High School from Standard Six to 10.

After matriculating in 1967, I started working at the old Jan Smuts Airport (today OR Tambo International).

BCT: For how long have you lived in Kempton Park?

PH: I currently live in Bredell Agricultural Holdings, where I have lived for the past 36 years.

BCT: Tell us about your personal life?

PH: After matriculating I moved to Kempton Park where I started working at the airport. I got married in 1973 to my late wife, Rosalyn Henning, and three children were born from this marriage, Shannon Mosterd, Michelle and Pieter Henning.

Rosalyn died in 1991.

I was remarried in October 1992, to Sandra Henning, and between us we have four children (my three and her son, Wayne Jordan).

We have three grandchildren, aged 18 months, seven and 21 years old.

BCT: Tell us about your decision to become a ward councillor?

PH: I worked all my life in the freight industry (clearing and forwarding) with and for companies in and around the airport.

After my children completed their high school careers, I decided to get involved with the local Bredell Community Precinct, where I got involved in dealing with councillors like André du Plessis and Benno Robinson.

During Robinson’s term (2006 to 2011), he got me involved in the DA.

I successfully applied to be a candidate for Ward 100 in 2011, and was fortunate enough to be accepted and elected in 2011 by the voters.

BCT: Do you have any hobbies?

PH: Sorry to disappoint, but I do not have any significant hobbies.

I am a regular citizen and enjoy working with my hands doing all sorts of handyman maintenance around the house and property.

BCT: You are 66 years old, what are your future plans and dreams?

PH: My future plans are to continue working with and for the DA, to bring change to the country through freedom, fairness and opportunities for all.
