Sterilisations begin at Bunny Park

The process to have bunnies at the Benoni Bunny Park sterilised has begun, with an interest group praising the municipality for its commitment to address concerns that have plagued the park.

For over a year, interest groups have been at odds with the municipality, pushing for the metro to address concerns of animal neglect.

On July 25, the two groups reached an out-of-court settlement.

Tania Forrest-Smith, of Save the Bunny Park Animals, said the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) fast-tracked the sterilisation process to have 50 bunnies sterilised.

Ten rabbits were being sterilised today (September 7), with the chance of 40 more being done by the end of next week.

Forrest-Smith could not say when the remaining animals would be fixed, but said the first 50 is a big victory.

“Fifty might sound like nothing, but this is what we have been fighting for,” she said.

“The municipality has been moving heaven and earth.”

Forrest-Smith told the City Times some of the bunnies have already found new homes, but that there should be about 10 from the batch of 50 that will need loving homes.

Interested parties will have to undergo home checks.

“They are going to beautiful homes where they are loved and cherished,” she said.

“It is bitter-sweet, but I know this is the right thing for the animals.”

She said Save the Bunny Park Animals, Ban Animal Trading (Bat) and the EMM are working towards a common goal: the health and safety of the park’s animals.

The metro asked the City Times to email questions pertaining to the park.

No response has yet been received.
