Life through a lens

Get ready for some mind-blowing exhibitions at the Photo and Film Expo from October 27 to 30.

A picture is worth a thousand words, or so the old saying goes.

For decades photographs have been used by journalists, artists and the man on the street to capture moments otherwise lost in time, and can be used to tell a story in a way that words just cannot.

A number of Caxton editors shared their thoughts of photos.

“Can you imagine reading a newspaper without any photographs?

“Photographs taken by journalists often summarise what is written in an article and are of utmost importance and are often used to enhance a story.

“This is especially true for readers who don’t have time to read the newspaper from back to front,” said Thelma Koorts, editor of the Brakpan Herald.

“My favourite thing about taking photos is that I can tell a story through my lens.

“Sometimes all you need is a good photo and words become almost unnecessary,” Melissa Hart, editor of the Germiston City News said.

“Strong photos draw readers to stories and make articles and publications come alive.

“Creative juices are let loose with a camera in hand,” said Kevin van der List, editor of the Benoni City Times.

At the annual Photo and Film Expo, which will be held at the Ticketpro Dome from October 27 to 30, photographers have the opportunity to travel back in time and take part in a workshop that will pay tribute to the original photographic processes.

The Alternative Print Workshop (https://alternativeprintworkshop.co.za) in conjunction with Museum Africa will be running a darkroom on site which will allow visitors a chance to get involved in a demonstration on the developing of film from yesteryear to today, allowing photo enthusiasts to fall more in love with photography.

Visitors can then jump forward in time to a dedicated underwater section.

“A special tank has been built by photographers specifically for underwater imaging.

“It will allow us to showcase underwater photography for the very first time at the expo,” explained event organiser, Matt Raven.
