Man arrested in CBD with drugs worth over R1.5-m

A man was arrested with drugs worth over R1.5-million in the Benoni CBD on Saturday, August 27.

The EMPD Drug Enforcement Unit made the arrest on Kimbolton Street, at about 7pm.

Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago, EMPD spokesperson, said the members witness what looked like an illegal transaction taking place between two men.

“The metro police decided to investigate and on approaching, the two men ran away,” said Kgasago.

“The metro police were able to apprehend the one who ran into a house in Kimbolton Street and uncovered an assortment of drugs in the house.”

Kgasago said police discovered six dagga “arms” (R6 600), 60 packets of CAT (R1.5-m), 71 packets of nyaope (R5 500) and packets of tik (R15 000).

In addition, police confiscated two small scales, four cellphones, two passports and R780 in cash.

“On registering charges of possession and dealing in illicit substances against the suspect at Benoni Police Station, it emerged that the suspect was arrested before on similar charges – in July this year – and that he is out on bail,” said Kgasago.

The 30-year-old suspect was expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court on August 29.
