Nine illegal immigrants arrested

An operation to curb illegal mining was conducted by the Benoni SAPS from 9am to 11am on August 23, in Lindelani and Kingsway.

Ekurhuleni Central Cluster spokesperson Const Zunickha Essakjee said nine illegal immigrants were arrested during the operation.

“Police also confiscated 17 phendukas (bowl with perforated bottom to sift water and soil from gold dust), 10 phenduka stands, 400 iron balls, 27 iron pots, two plastic dishes, one mental dish and 20kg of gold dust,” she added.

The spokesperson added that an Isuzu bakkie was also seized for inquiry.

All suspects arrested were detained at the Benoni Police Station.
