How to adopt your next furry friend

The process of adopting a pet from the Benoni SPCA is fairly simple.

Shelley Owens, co-chairperson of the society, explained the process step-by-step.

•Call the office before going through, to check availability. The Benoni SPCA can be reached on 011 894 2814/5.

•Come through personally to meet the animal and check compatibility.

•Once a suitable pet has been chosen, complete the adoption papers at reception and pay a R100 deposit.

•A home check will be done over approximately the next four days; if approved, your animal will be sent for sterilisation as soon as possible.

•You will need to pay the remainder of the adoption fee and will be able to collect your animal. Dogs are R900, while it is R600 to adopt cats. These prices include first vaccination, de-worming, sterilisation, a micro chip and a collar.

•If you have dogs in the family already, the Benoni SPCA recommends a “social visit”. This is where your “fur kids” can meet with the potential adoptee dog on neutral ground and see how they get along.

“For adopters out of Benoni we can certainly arrange for home inspections with the SPCA branch in your area,” said Owens.

“These adopters must also come in personally and meet the animal and complete the paperwork.

“This only applies to animals that are of sterilisation age.

“Pups and kittens too young for sterilisation must be adopted within the Benoni jurisdiction.”

The Benoni SPCA is situated at 3 Klein Street, in Lakefield.

The office number is 011 894 2814/5.
