The anticipated public participation meeting, regarding the possible development or sale of the Benoni Country Club (BCC) by the Ekurhuleni Metro, was due to be held tonight (Wednesday, August 17), but was postponed.

In official comment received on Monday, August 15, metro spokesman Themba Gadebe said: “Council approved that a public participation should take place, however, the outcome of the public participation will be evaluated by the mayoral committee before it goes to council for final decision.

“It is now known that council structures are not yet constituted.

“For that matter, it is prudent that the committee first be appraised of the programme before the meetings are held.

“This is to ensure a seamless flow when the issue finally goes to council.

“It was, therefore, decided that the meetings be postponed until council is constituted.

“The dates of the meeting will be announced in due course.”

Asked if council would sit down with BCC’s executive to discuss a way forward, Gadebe said: “The management team in the Property Management Division, Real Estate Department, is willing to meet the club if necessary, however, no formal meeting has been scheduled.”

Ward 27’s new councillor, Jacques Meiring, told the City Times that, as councillor of the ward in which the BCC falls, he supports the current state and structure as it is.

He added that he and his party, the Democratic Alliance, would issue a press statement on the BCC issue as soon as the new council is convened.

“Although we, as a club, are unaware of the exact reasons for the ‘cancellation’, we believe that the immense support received from the community of Benoni has placed added pressure on an already questionable need to sell off an asset of the community for development,” said BCC CEO Darren Millington.

“It is with this in mind BCC would like to thank the community of Benoni, for the overwhelming support that has been received.”
