Man dies after falling down mine shaft

A man died after falling 200m down a mine shaft, in New Modder.

The body of the 53-year-old man was removed by Mines Rescue Services from the mine shaft at around 3.30pm on Monday (August 15).

The shaft is situated between Golden Drive and New Modder Road.

According to Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni Police spokesperson, the man, who stayed in Chief Albert Luthuli Park Extension Six, went missing on August 9.

A case of a missing person was opened within two days, at the Crystal Park Police Station.

The man’s vehicle was found by family at the shaft on Friday (August 12).

Sekele told the City Times the man was gathering scrap metal from a mound near the shaft.

It is believed he then slipped and fell into the shaft, which is about 200m deep.

According to the City Times representative on site, the man’s body had severe facial wounds.
