Vehicle crashes through Salvation Army wall

The Salvation Army in Benoni is relieved nobody was injured after a vehicle crashed through the centre’s boundary wall yesterday (August 13) evening.

The incident happened at about 7pm, when the driver of a VW Polo crashed through the precast wall at its Turvey Street entrance.

“I was in the office when I heard the crash,” said the centre manager, Andries Neethling.

“I thought it was so serious they would have to cut the guy out of the car.”

Neethling said a meeting with residents had just concluded when the accident happened, which meant many of the residents were not in the garden, near the area where the car came to a standstill.

“Some residents helped him (the driver) get out of the car, and when we looked again, he ran away,” said Neethling.

Neethling said he hopes the damage to the wall, which he estimates at about R20 000, will be covered by insurance.

He is thankful there were not any injuries.

“It was an enormous impact,” he added.

“… We are so poor and now this has happened.”

The centre erected barbed wire where the car has damaged the wall.
