Metro offers free ICT training

The Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) will provide free Information Communication Technology (ICT) training to people in Germiston tomorrow (August 13).

The training, which is open to people between the ages of seven and 21, will include teaching people to write and create mobile applications, games and websites.

“The eight-week-long Learnerthon programme will provide candidates with skills on computer basics, digital literacy, creative coding, app studio and touch develop (Gamification),” said EMM spokesperson Themba Gadebe.

“This will empower young people with free ICT coding skills, to inspire them to pursue careers in the ICT space and spark their creative side.”

Pupils will be expected to work in groups to decide on a project towards the end of the course and to develop it from start to finish, with the support of their mentors.

An 80 per cent pass rate on the digital literacy course is a prerequisite for learners to progress to the next course.

Post the Learnerthon programme, participants have an option to pursue a six-week course on computer analytics, also offered for free at Ekurhuleni libraries.

Registration takes place on August 13, at 10am, at the Germiston Library (Germiston Civic Centre, Corner Queen and Cross Street), or the Katlehong Library (Katlehong Civic Centre, 1 Masakhane Street).
