BREAKING: Benoni Country Club public participation meeting postponed

The anticipated public participation meeting on the night of Wednesday, August 17 regarding the possible development or sale of the Benoni Country Club (BCC) by the Ekurhuleni metro has officially been postponed.

Email correspondence sent today (which the City Times has seen) from the metro’s divisional head of property management in the Real Estate Department, Pieter Grobler, informed various council officials and BCC’s CEO Darren Millington that City Manager Khaya Ngema had instructed the postponement of the current public participation meetings on Strategic Land Parcels (SLPs) that were due to be held throughout Ekurhuleni.

“The City Manager instructed that we must cancel the current public participation meetings on SLPs,” the email read.

“The meetings will take place at a later date to be confirmed in the media.”

This postponement comes after an official notice (notice number 23/2016) was published in the Beeld newspaper yesterday (Wednesday, August 10), in contrast to official media comment received from metro spokesman Themba Gadebe on July 20 where it was stated that the notice would appear in the Benoni City Times.

Gadebe confirmed with the City Times today that the public participation meeting had indeed been postponed to a future date, but could not provide the reasoning for the postponement.

The BCC executive committee described the postponement as “a win for now”.

The committee thanked the members of public who have shown interest in saving the club and who have put pressure on the metro up until this point.
