Local choir serenades Princess Charlene in Monaco

The Cenestra Male Choir from Ekurhuleni had the pleasure and privilege of serenading Her Serene Highness Princess Charlene of Monaco and her husband, His Serene Highness Prince Albert of Monaco, on July 22 at the Pink Palace.

The royal couple and their distinguished guests were in awe and captivated in song, with original African songs delivered by the men.

The choir flew over to Monaco as a surprise gift for Princess Charlene, organised by her father, Mike Wittstock, and Lotfi Maktouf, an avid supporter of the princess and the Wittstock family.

The choir sang their lungs out at the Pink Palace in honour of the princess being inducted as a Patron of the South African Red Cross Association.

They sang popular South African originals, including “Shosholoza” and “Impi” and the popular “How great thou art”.

Before the performance on the day of their arrival, on July 20, the choir decided to visit Nice, France, to pay respect and homage to the victims of the Nice attack, where 84 people died when a truck rammed into a crowd of people in July.

Mike laid a special wreath in honour of his family at the scene of the crime.

Clint Cunningham, from the choir, also laid a wreath on behalf of the choir.

The following day, the choir paid a visit to a popular pub in Monaco, Slammers, a favourite of Mike. Out of nowhere, on the pavement outside the pub, they broke into song. A huge crowd gathered to cheer and support them, including residents in the vicinity who were clapping from their apartment windows.

On Friday, Clint shared another surprise with the princess at the Red Cross event: he sang an original song which he wrote specially for the royal, titled “My Bulawayo Princess”.

Clint grew up in Bulawayo.

Mike thanked Clint and the members of the choir for their continued support and their spirit of Ubuntu.
