This is what you need to do on voting day

Voting for the municipal elections is around the corner and voters need to ensure that they follow the correct procedure in order for their vote to be valid.

According to the Electoral Commission of South Africa (IEC South Africa) there are eight steps involved in the voting process, which will take place on August 3:

• Find your correct voting station:

Every voting station has large clear signs outside marking it as a voting station.

If you are uncertain which voting station you are registered at, use the Voting Station Finder on https://maps.elections.org.za/vsfinder/ to find your station.

Voters who do not have access to the internet can also find their voting station through SMS:

•Dial *120*432# and follow the prompts.

•SMS your ID number to 32810 (at a cost of R1).

•Click the “My Registration Details” button on www.elections.org.za.

•Call the Electoral Commission Contact Centre on 0800 11 8000 (7am – 9pm weekdays).

•Present your valid identification document to the door controller at the entrance to the voting station:

At the entrance of the voting station is an election official who is the door controller.

You need to present valid identification documentation (green barcoded ID book, smart-card ID or temporary ID certificate).

These documents will be scanned and a slip will be provided to confirm you are a registered voter. The official will also tell you when it is your turn to enter the station and will advise where to go once inside the voting station.

•Check that you are on the voters’ roll:

Once inside the voting station, proceed to the voters’ roll table where election officials will take your ID document and check for your name and identity number on the segment of the national common voters’ roll for that voting district.

Your name will then be crossed off and an official will ink your left thumb. The ink will not wash off for several days.

•Get your ballot papers:

An election official will hand you your ballot papers which have a unique number and you must make sure that there is a stamp on the back of the papers to verify that they were issued to you on that Election Day.

For municipal elections, voters in metropolitan and local councils will receive two ballot papers (one for a ward councillor and one for a political party, as part of the PR section of the election.

•Have your identification documents stamped:

Your identification document will be stamped by an election official to show that you participated in the election.

•Find an empty voting booth and make your “X”:

You will then be directed to an empty voting booth. Here you will place your X on your ballot paper in the box next to the candidate of your choice.

If you make a mistake, call an election official and they will provide you with a new ballot paper. When you are finished, fold your ballot papers in half and leave the voting booth.

You are not allowed to take selfies in this booth so please refrain from taking a photo of your ballot paper or yourself.

•Cast your vote:

An election official stationed at the ballot box will check that there is a stamp at the back of each of your ballots.

After you have voted, drop your completed ballot paper through the slot in the top of the ballot box.

•Leave the voting station.
