Dorine dies at 99

Dorine Ward (née Stroud) died peacefully on July 9, at the age of 99.

The second of six children, Ward was born on July 11, 1917, in Benoni, where she attended school and lived for most of her life.

In her younger years she played tennis and was an avid painter and member of the Benoni Art Society.

She went on to train as a seamstress and later as a photographer.

Her family said Ward also enjoyed knitting and crocheting and had a love for animals, which became evident whenever she was with her dog, Trixie.

Ward met and married her husband, Robert Ward, in 1938 and together they had three children, Patrick Ward, Catherine Wicks and Maureen Smith.

She has seven grandchildren, nine great-grandchildren and had recently become a great-great-grandmother.

Dorine spent her last years at Damant Lodge, in Port Alfred, among treasured friends.

“We all thank you Dorine for making our lives richer… be free and rest in peace,” was the message from her family and friends.

There will be a memorial service for Ward at the end of August, in the Carmelite Church in Benoni.
