Homeless will benefit from Northfield sleep-out

The community of Benoni is being invited to experience a night of homelessness.

Members of the Northfield Methodist Church will be participating in the Sun International Sympathy SleepOut and are appealing to the Benoni community to join them.

The sleep out will be held on Thursday, July 28, at the church’s premises, on the corner of Aerodrome Drive and Webb Street, to show awareness of the plight of homeless people.

The church will set up a soup kitchen for those who will be sleeping out and will be packing and distributing meals to areas of need in Benoni, such as the John Wesley Community Centre, St Peter’s Methodist Church in Etwatwa, and Nora’s Educare Centre in Putfontein.

Other places in the Benoni CBD will be targeted as well.

They hope to pack an estimated 4 000 meals within two hours (from 9pm) and will need manpower for the packing and distribution of the meals.

For those who will be participating, the church is requesting that the following items be donated:

•Bar of soap and a facecloth

•Bag of firewood

•A no-name brand waterproof jacket with a hood

These items will be given to the Salvation Army’s Goodwill Centre, in Benoni.

Brig Johan Jacobs, station commander of the Benoni SAPS, has been invited to the sleep out and is expected to open the evening with a talk about issues related to the homeless.
