Fire station gets a facelift

The Rynfield Fire Station on Pretoria Road is undergoing a major revamp.

The project, to change and improve the appearance of the fire station, began on June 1.

“We are bringing in the new and doing away with the old,” said William Ntladi, spokesperson for the Ekurhuleni Disaster and Emergency Management Services.

With phase one of three in place, the front of the fire station is set to be refurbished from top to bottom, presumably by the end of August.

Ntladi said they are excited about the anticipated change of the fire station.

“The roof is being repaired and repainted; it used to leak but all the cracks have been sealed,” he said.

The exterior of the front building is being repainted and new windows have been installed in one of the rooms.

The large doors through which fire trucks exit will be replaced with new, modernised doors that have stronger glass.

The interior of the front building will be repainted and tiled, and the ceiling will be redone.

“The lecture room is going to be transformed into an auditorium, complete with new furniture, an air conditioner, new lighting, a projector and Wi-Fi connection, conducive to learning,” Ntladi said.

Phase two of the project will be the revamping of the quarters in the station, which includes offices, stores, the kitchen and equipment stores for vehicles.

Phase three will include the refurbishing of the houses of the firefighters.

Ntladi added that the standby generator was going to be replaced with a new one, in light of the station’s refurbishment.

He said it is not yet known when the whole project is scheduled to be finished or what its value is.
