The incident happened in the CBD, on Thursday (July 21), at around 11.30am.
Security guards were escorting a cash-in-transit vehicle in Prince’s Avenue, near the corner of Tom Jones Street.
After the vehicle was securely parked, they walked to the destined bank nearby, as is routine.
Capt Nomsa Sekele, Benoni SAPS spokesperson, said a 25-year-old man then approached one of the sentinels and tried to grab his weapon.
“According to the guard, a gunshot went off during the struggle between the suspect and himself,” Sekele said.
“The man was shot in his lower leg.
“He was taken to Tambo Memorial Hospital, under police guard.”
Sekele said the man will be charged with attempted robbery.
