On-duty police officer shot in CBD

An on-duty police officer was shot and injured last night (July 19) in CBD.

The officer was on patrol duty at around 11.40pm, when the incident occurred.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele said the K9 unit officers were patrolling when they saw five suspicious men on foot at the corner of Harpur Avenue and Bunyan Street.

“The officers approached the men and asked them to stop, one of the men was carrying a black refuse plastic bag,” said Sekele.

“When the police got out of their vehicle, the men started running in different directions.”

Sekele added that police drove after the man who was carrying the plastic bag.

The man started shooting at the police and the officer who was driving was shot in his lower body.

Several hours later, police received a tip off and one of the men who had a plastic bag was arrested.

The plastic bag had an R5 rifle and a pistol in it.

The 30-year old suspect was arrested and charged for being in possession of unlicensed firearms and attempted murder.

He is currently being detained at the Benoni Police Station.

The officer who was shot is in a stable condition at the Life the Glynnwood Hospital and police are still searching for the other four suspects.
