Supermarket robbed on Russel Street

Three suspects robbed a supermarket on the corner of Russel Street and Howard Avenue on Tuesday morning (July 19).

“One of the suspects was armed and pointed a gun at the manager,” said Benoni Police Station spokesperson Capt Nomsa Sekele.

“They then took his cellphone, an undisclosed amount of money from the cash till, airtime and cigarettes.”

The three suspects fled the scene in a double cab Toyota Hilux.

“There were only two people in the store and they were the staff,” Sekele added.

“Fortunately, there were no customers and nobody was hurt.”

The supermarket is located at the former butchery, The Benoni Butcher Co, where the late butchery owner, Fakrudeen Muthalib, was shot dead earlier this year.
