Motorist upset by child on bakkie

A motorist has criticised the driver of a double cab bakkie, who was transporting a young child on the back of the vehicle, in traffic.

The concerned driver, who wants to remain anonymous, said he saw the white Ford Ranger bakkie at the intersection of Great North Road and Oak Street, on July 11.

He said a man and woman were inside the vehicle, while the toddler was seated in the back of the vehicle.

“It is dangerous, careless and illegal for a child to sit at the back of the bakkie, especially when it is open,” he said.

EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said that, according to the National Road Traffic Act 93 of 1996, it does not debar the carrying of persons in a light delivery vehicle (LDV) meant to carry goods.

“The Act prescribes only that people transported on the back of an open van with sides 300mm in height [or less] must be seated, while, if anyone is standing, the sides have to be at least 900mm high [or higher],” said Kgasago.

“This prescription is obviously based on the fact that a vehicle in motion, coming to a sudden stop or swerve, might spill the passengers in a goods vehicle not complying, with dire consequences.”

Kgasago said anyone who sees such an incident should inform authorities by providing the registration of the vehicle concerned which will facilitate locating the vehicle involved and taking the necessary steps.

A report can be made at any EMPD Precinct Station in that area, or you can call the EMM Call Centre on 011 458 0911.
