Competition inspires Kopano to help others

Pushed by her passion to make a change in the community, 17-year-old Kopano Maja entered the Miss Teen Commonwealth South Africa competition.

The Grade 11 Willowmoore High School pupil was a finalist in the top 29, and competed against other teens on July 2 at the Atterbury Theatre in Tshwane.

Although Maja did not bring the crown home, she said her experience in the competition was life changing.

“The competition was inspiring and has made me a better person than I was before,” she said.

“It helped me realise that I need to experience things in order to grow.”

As part of the pageant, Maja had to complete several tasks, including charity work, radio and newspaper interviews and a motivation speech, which she delivered in front of her peers at school.

“When I entered the competition my mother thought I was joking,” said Maja.

“She only realised it was real when she saw me reaching the semi-finals and the finals.”

According to Maja, she and a group of friends are currently running a feeding scheme that helps feed about 18 to 20 children every morning.

Maja plans to continue making a difference in the community and changing the perspectives of her peers in a positive way.
