The care centre aims to create an environment that enables uplifting and empowerment through its various initiatives, said communications officer, Andrew Wessels.
“The organisation does skills and economic development and strives to help vulnerable people to become proactive members of society,” said Wessels.
To sustain and keep the care centre running, the seedling project, which also offers training in farming and agriculture, was developed 16 years ago.
Farmers are encouraged to buy seedlings at the smallholding in Brentwood Park, which currently services farms as far afield as Orkney, Klerksdorp, Moruleng and Bakubang, in Rustenburg.
The seedlings are of vegetables that include beetroot, spinach, broccoli, butternut, cabbage, carrots and cauliflower.
Wessels said each seedling costs 35c and they offer a delivery service for farmers.
Their facility has a capacity to grow 500 000 seedlings at any given time.
“We grow our seedlings in 16 seedling production units built by ourselves, 14 eco-net tunnels, one large shade net tunnel and five poly tunnels.”
The MCC believes all people should have access to sufficient, safe and nutritious foods to maintain a healthy and active life.
They have other branches that help people in need, that include the Manna soup kitchen and Manger Eden which provides support to abused women and children.
These branches rely heavily on contributions and donations from local business as well as the seedling project.
