Interesting talks for retired folk

Approaching your retirement can leave you wondering: “What will I be doing now?”. This can be an unpleasant feeling.

The Benoni Probus Club, which is a social club for retired men, aims to ease the unpleasantness by creating an opportunity for retired folk to be active and interact with people outside of their inner circles.

The Probus Club, which celebrates its 26th anniversary this year, currently has over 50 members, most of whom are specialists in a diversity of professions, that range from electrical engineers to medical practitioners.

Members of the club participate in social as well as educational events, and visit places of interest such as engineering companies and breweries.

President of the Benoni Probus Club, Don King, said they also have monthly meetings where speakers from various institutions give a talk on subjects in which they specialise, which gives club members an opportunity to participate in interesting group discussions.

They held a meeting on June 23 at the Benoni Country Club, where one of their members, Neil Broom, gave a talk on the civilian use of nuclear power and energy, which was met with much discussion by members who attended.

King said they’ve also had specialists who’ve spoken on and presented a multitude of health issues, such Alzheimer’s Disease, hearing loss and eye-sight problems.

To become a member you can either be nominated by two people from the club, or approach any member and tell them of your interest in the club.

King said that, although the club consists mostly of members who are professionals in different fields, it isn’t exclusive to them.

“We would like to invite more people to join our club; it is a good organisation to be a part of,” he said.
