Gang holds metro workers ‘hostage’

Members of the OVL Gang held a group of the municipality’s employees hostage on June 25, the same day one of the gang’s members was buried.

EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago said the funeral of one of these members was held in Etwatwa on June 25.

“After the burial, groups of people, purported to be members of the OVL gang, ran amok, intimidating and terrorising residents in the area,” he added.

“A couple of incidents of council workers being held hostage were attended to by the law enforcers.”

Kgasago said the funeral was closely monitored by the EMPD and SAPS.

“On Skhosana Street, in Extension 19, an Ekurhuleni Metropolitain Municipality (EMM) water department vehicle with workers was held hostage by a group of men,” he explained.

“The police responded and the suspects managed to evade arrest by running when the police approached.

“Several reports of intimidation were received, to which the police responded in the nick of time in each incident, and thus no arrests were made and no reports of any person sustaining injuries were received.

”Pockets of these groups were moving from one place to the other, which made it difficult to make any arrests.

“Fortunately, on the other hand, the suspects had little time to commit serious wrongdoings, save to intimidate law-abiding residents.”

Police did not respond to questions about the OVL Gang and its dealings in Etwatwa.
