Constitutional club was once a gentlemen’s club

Benoni’s Constitutional Club (known as the Connie Club) opened in 1906 at 5 Ampthill Avenue and started off as a gentlemen’s club, founded mainly by English-speaking miners from the surrounding gold mines.

It became a place where members would go to create friendships, play games and spend time getting to know their fellow community members.

In 1911, the club applied to the newly-formed Benoni Town Council to build a building on the corner of Swan Street and Lake Avenue.

So, in January 1912 the Constitutional Club opened its new premises which was an old fashioned single story building consisting of a bar room, a lounge and a billiards room.
