What to do when your wheelie bin is stolen

The metro will give you a new wheelie bin if yours has been stolen, but only once they are satisfied that your bin was in fact stolen.

The roll-out of wheelie bins is currently being undertaken in several wards.

A Rynfield resident, who did not want to be named, said her bin was stolen from her pavement on June 17, the same day she collected it from a site on Benoni Road.

She said the container was taken on Greybe Street, along with all the rubbish inside.

The resident did not report the bin as stolen, and did not know what process to follow.

Mayoral spokesperson Zweli Dlamini said people must reported stolen bins to the police.

Once a case number has been reported to the Ekurhuleni Metropolitain Municipality’s (EMM) call centre or customer care centre, the municipality will assess the case.

If they are satisfied that the bin was stolen, it will be “replaced immediately”.

Dlamini urged the public to take care of the containers.
