New sewer pump station in Phase Two

Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM) MMC Clr Doctor Xhakaza handed over a project of upgrading a sewer pump stations and construction of a new outfall sewer in Benoni, Phase Two.

The project was given to the appointed constructor, Riverside Chuene Construction on June 17 at the Water and Sanitation Department, Crystal Park Depot.

This project will be a 50 months contract which will cost R16-million to complete.

According to the EMM Water and Sanitation HOD, Philemon Mashoko, this project is part of the 52 identified pump stations that will be eliminated in the city.

“We have conducted a study and identified these pump stations to be turned into gravity reduce,” said Mashoko.

“We want to reduce energy usage on our sewers and make use of gravity.”

Mashoko added that, at the end of this project, the Ebotse and Crystal Park pump stations will be eliminated and a new outfall sewer will be built.

Xhakaza said that, as the municipality, they don’t normally get involved in with the constructors, they just approve the budget.

“This is the first time the municipality has sat down with the constructors, to get an understanding of what exactly will be the outcome at the end of the project,” he said.

“We spend about half a billion per annum on new infrastructure for both sewer and water.

“What we trying to do now, is select these projects, talk about them and get a better understanding of what the elimination of these sewers is about, the reason behind it and the impact around them.”

“We have also now introduced penalties for constructors who don’t finish the projects on time.”

Mashoko explained that the use of gravity will reduce electricity usage and sustain river stream pollution.

On the day, a site visit to the new sewer pump station (Phase One), at J.P. Mare, Cloverdene Road, was also undertaken.
