Wheelie bin roll-out grinds to a halt in Ward 24

The distribution of wheelie bins in Crystal Park has come to halt, but the reasons behind it are not clear.

The distribution of wheelie bins in Crystal Park has come to halt, until the distribution of wheelie bins in Ward 73 are complete.

“The roll-out plan will be communicated to the various ward councillors and role-players in due course,” said Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality spokesperson, Zweli Dlamini.

Ward 24’s Clr Stefanie Ueckermann said the stoppage was due to too many DA members working on the distribution, but after this was corrected, the roll-out failed to commence.

The roll-out of 240l wheelie bins in Ward 24 started on June 6 and came to a halt until one member of the DA who was working on the distribution was replaced with someone who did not belong to the DA.

“The roll-out of the wheelie bins was scheduled to take place from 11am until 7pm on Monday (June 6), at the Crystal Park Police Station and Crystal Park Clinic.

“At noon the wheels for the bins ran out and 100 to 200 residents were waiting for them.

“At 4pm, the whole roll-out of bins in Ward 24 stopped, as there were no wheels, no pins and no forms, and the only answer from the officials was: ‘Sorry, nothing we can do.’”

However, Ward 73’s Clr Samuel Ngobese said bins can be distributed to only one area at a time.

“The roll-out is still happening in my ward,” he added.

“Therefore, based on my understanding, the roll-out should not have begun in Ward 24.”

According to Ngobese, the roll-out for his ward should end by Friday (June 17), at the latest.

“As far as I understand, whoever gave the go-ahead for Ward 24 was mistaken and that is why the roll-out was stopped,” he said.

“But that is only my understanding of the story.”

Ueckermann said she was disheartened as it seems that politics override service delivery.

“I thus request that the roll-out in Ward 24 be reinstated and a formal apology be issued to the residents of Ward 24,” she added.

“All wheelie bins should have been distributed to the entire Benoni area by the end of June.”

Meanwhile, Crystal Park resident Kabelo Mahonko said she still has no wheelie bin and was uncertain when they would be getting theirs.

“The roll-out comes from the municipality, nobody was campaigning for a political party so I do not think the distribution should have stopped due to politics,” she said.

“Also, we were told it would have begun on Monday (June 6), and then suddenly there was a shortage of wheels.

“We are still sitting without dustbins today (June 13).”

The EMM apologised for the inconvenience.
