Boys represent Gauteng internationally

Being the Gauteng winners of an international competition has proved to be an exciting experience for three Benoni High School pupils.

Of about 60 schools who competed at a regional level, the team made up of Deuel Govender, Basheq Tarifi and Ayrton Amaral, was crowned the winner of the competition.

“This came as a shock; we were expecting to do well, but not that well,” said Govender.

The World Scholar’s Cup was played at Bishop Bavin School, in Bedfordview, on May 20 and 21.

“It was an awesome experience, we were prepared, but the competition was insane,” said Amaral.

After being placed seventh the previous year, the team said they wanted to try again, but they weren’t expecting to win.

Started by Daniel Berdichevsky, the first World Scholar’s Cup took place in Korea, in 2007.

The competition consisted of a variety of activities, such as a multiple choice intelligence test, creative writing, debating and a talent show.

The all-boys team started preparing for the competition a month or two before the competition.

Under the guidance of Chantel Morkot (teacher), the trio had six topics that they had to research before participating in the competition.

The three now qualify to participate in the mini global round, in Prague, from July 20 to 26.

The pupils are appealing to the public and possible sponsors to help them raise funds for them to compete in Prague, next month.
