UPDATE: Give it time before switching on appliances – councillor

Due to the system being overloaded, the electricity supply to parts of Benoni tripped shortly after it was restored.

At 5pm, electricity was still off in parts of Northmead, Brentwood Park and Rynfield and it was unclear where exactly it was back on.

According to several Rynfield residents, the power switched on at around 2.30pm, but was lost again within an hour.

Later reports indicated the power had tripped at least twice by 4.40pm.

At 3.45pm, the metro said power should be restored to 90 per cent of Brentwood Park and Northmead.

“It’s overload; people are immediately switching on everything, then the power keeps tripping,” said Clr Mary Goby (Ward 28).

“I know it’s been a hard 24 hours, but people have to be patient and give it time before they switch all their appliances back on again.”

The electrical supply went off in several areas on Monday evening.

According to metro spokesperson Zweli Dlamini, the cause was a cable fault at a Rynfield substation, in Pretoria Road.

Dlamini said the Ekurhuleni municipality will deploy additional standby personnel to respond to power cuts in winter.

“The increased demand for heating sources to keep warm as the winter temperatures drop, is placing pressure on the electricity network,” he said.
