Raymond-Talbot dies at 88

Long-standing former Benoni resident Philippa Raymond-Talbot died at the age of 88, in East London, on May 25.

Although she moved to East London in 2002, she was an active member of the Benoni community for several years, since 1959.

She lived in Farrarmere, Rynfield, and then in the Benoni CBD, before her move in 2002.

“My mother was a very talented and loving woman who proved to me that even in dire circumstance, always trust in God,” said her daughter, Shandy McJarrow.

“She was a long-time member of the Benoni City Orchestra, from the ’70s (over 25 years) playing the saxophone and the clarinet, and dealt a lot with the late Ella Till, a councillor of Benoni.

“She was also an avid dancer and taught at Arthur Murry’s dance school in Benoni.”

McJarrow reminisced on her mother’s life as one being very difficult, but her mother always made the best of every situation.

“She was born in Newcastle and was an abused child,” she said.

“She was kicked out of her home with her elder sister when she was only 12 years old and was later put into a foster home, where they used her as a servant.”

Raymond-Talbot married three times, the last time being to the late Richard Frank ”Dick” Talbot, who was an accountant.

She is survived by her daughter and son-in-law, Shandy and Raymond McJarrow; her son and daughter-in-law Simon and Sandra Senekal and her sister Syllana van Tonder.

She was also a grandmother of three, great-grandmother of seven and great-great grandmother of one child.
