Man kidnapped, tied up and assaulted

The Ekurhuleni SAPS Central Task Team have arrested two men in connection with the kidnapping and assault of a 25-year-old man.

According to Benoni SAPS communications officer Const Zunickha Essakjee, the incident took place on June 7, in the Benoni CBD.

“It is alleged that three kidnappers accused the man of stealing their money, forced him to get into a white Quantum and drove off,” said Essakjee.

“They took the victim to eMandleni Squatter Camp, in Wattville, where they tied his hands, chained his body and assaulted him.”

Essakjee added that the suspects then contacted the victim’s brother and demanded money from him; the brother informed his sister who alerted the police.

The sister then arranged with the suspects to come and pick up the money at the corner of Voortrekker Street and Woburn Avenue.

“The sister went to the pick-up spot with the police and the two suspects were arrested,” said Essakjee.

When police asked the men where the victim was, they took the officers to the squatter camp.

Essakjee said the victim sustained injuries, although she could not specify the nature of the injuries.

Police are still searching for one suspect, who is still at large.

A case of kidnapping and assault has been opened at the Benoni Police Station.

The suspects are being detained at the Benoni Police Station and are expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court soon.

Police are still investigating the case.
