Upset over police parking in disabled bay

Provincial police will investigate an incident in which a marked police vehicle was parked in a disabled parking bay on May 31.

Clr Mary Goby told the City Times she confronted the driver of the vehicle at the Benoni Licensing Department for having parked in the bay.

“I spotted the vehicle parked in a disabled parking bay,” said Goby.

“Needless to say the driver was not disabled so I asked if she knew she was in a disabled parking.

“The reply was, ‘can you not see that this is a state vehicle?’”

Provincial SAPS spokesperson Lieut-Col Lungelo Dlamini said police vehicles may not be parked in disabled bays, unless there are “exceptional circumstances or emergency situations for the purpose of crime prevention or the protection of life”.

“Members of the SAPS driving police vehicles must, at all times, strictly comply with the traffic laws and regulations and also be considerate to other drivers,” said Dlamini.

“This incident and circumstances where the SAPS vehicle was parked in a disabled bay, will be investigated.

“If it is found that the driver negatively affected the image and integrity of the service, misconduct will be investigated.”

Goby said she is a champion for the disabled and will fight tooth and nail for them.
