Marching for the future generation

Several associations joined forces on Friday (May 27), to march to the Ekurhuleni Customer Care Centre, on the corner of Tom Jones Street and Elston Avenue.

Their purpose was to hand over a memorandum in support of Child Protection Week, which is held from May 27 to June 2.

The associations, including the Greater Benoni Child Welfare, Tutela Family Care, Actonville Child and Family Welfare Society, Almond Tree Baby Home and The 100% Foundation dressed up like children and began marching from The Greater Benoni Child Welfare premises, on Third Avenue, Northmead.

The memorandum was received by ANC deputy chief whip Ebrahim Motara, who encouraged the organisations to report any suspicious behaviour pertaining to children to the relevant authorities.

“I am glad that you are highlighting the plight of children, and we support you,” he said.

The memorandum consisted of several points, including:

• Government officials and departments need to be more child-friendly.

• Leaders and parents need to stand together for the benefit of their children.

• Community members need to be motivated to report any form of child abuse.

• Schools need to have clean toilets.

• School fees for foster children should be exempt.

Motara signed the memorandum and the senior administration officer for the Benoni Customer Relations management, Rose Motaung, made a copy to give back to Elsie Labuschagne, who handed over the memorandum.

After a peaceful handover and acceptance, Motara returned to his meeting and the associations marched back to Northmead.
