Mayor gets his hands dirty

Ekurhuleni mayor Clr Mondli Gungubele took part in the Clean Neighbourhood Fridays initiative at the Wattville Hostel, on May 27, which saw about 50 people attending.

Gungubele was accompanied by several members of various departments within the Ekurhuleni Metropolitan Municipality (EMM), including people from opposition parties, who picked up litter and wore gloves and face masks.

The clean-up session began around 8.10am and the EMM members divided themselves into several groups to clean as much of the hostel as quickly as possible in order to attend to other hostels on the day.

Gungubele was not afraid to get his hands dirty when picking up litter.

“I am here to work and clean – everyone else is parading,” he joked.

Customer relationship manager (CRM) of Etwatwa, Mmabatho Ntlakana, joked back saying holding the dustbin packet is hard work.

DA Ward 28 Clr Mary Goby also showed turned up for the initiative, and together with ANC Ward 29 Clr Imtiaz Loonat, they picked up litter.

Clean Neighbourhood Fridays is held on the last Friday of every month.

“We have been holding this campaign for six months already,” said the human settlement MMC, Aubrey Nxumalo.

“Last month we cleaned the informal settlements.

“This Friday, we decided to clean the 24 hostels in the Ekurhuleni area.

“In three to five years, these hostels will be a family unit.”
