Dogs confiscated after being starved

The Benoni SPCA confiscated five dogs from a Western Extension property on May 23, after neighbours complained that the animals were digging in rubbish bin bags on the street due to starvation.

“The owners will not be getting their dogs back,” said SPCA senior inspector Vicky Finnemore.

“The dogs were taken to the vet to establish whether they had worms or if they were being starved.

“They were being starved.”

A husky, German Shepherd and three cross-boerboels were placed in the care of the SPCA who will attempt to nurture them back to health.

“We received a call from the neighbours complaining about the dogs late last week,” said Finnemore.

“So we visited the premises on Friday (May 20) and issued a written warning to have the dogs taken to a veterinarian and sheltered by Monday (May 23).

“But, on Monday, when we visited the premises again, the owners had failed to adhere to the warning, so we removed the dogs.”

The home owner, who asked to remain anonymous, said he went through a tough time financially, but made sure the dogs were well fed prior to his monetary troubles.

“We fed the dogs pap for the three weeks when we went through a rough patch,” he said.

“But now we are back on track and we will take care of them.”

The owner called the neighbours spiteful for calling the SPCA after noticing the dogs had lost a bit of weight.

Finnemore said the SPCA is still in the process of deciding what to do with regard to legalities.
