Scores of illegal immigrants arrested

The EMPD arrested 99 people for being in the country illegally on May 26.

The Bumper to Bumper Operation, held in Benoni from 2pm until 10pm, particularly targeted illegal immigrants, said EMPD spokesperson Lieut-Col Wilfred Kgasago.

Authorities focused on First, Prince’s, Elston and Harpur avenues, and Voortrekker, Turvey, Kimbolton, Tom Jones and Bunyan streets.

Kgasago said people from the following countries were arrested:

• Malawians (28)

• Ethiopians (20)

• Congolese (20)

• Zimbabweans (21)

• Nigerians (10)

All the suspects were charged in terms of Section 34 of the Immigration Act, 13 of 2002 at Benoni Police Station and were expected to appear in the Benoni Magistrate’s Court, soon.
