Good food with good friends

The calm, peaceful setting is enhanced by a fireplace that warms up the entire room.

The tranquil colours on the walls complement the newspaper theme that runs throughout the restaurant.

Walls are lined with the history of Benoni.

Knowing we would have a great time catching up, I asked one of my good friends to join me for an evening of delicious food at On Sixth, situated in Northmead.

Within a couple of minutes of sitting down with my friend Thando Sikhosana, she suggested that we make more visits to the restaurant with some of our other friends.

Being spoilt for choice we decided to order different meals, eat only half and then swap, to get a taste of what the other one was eating.

My love for seafood got the best of me and I opted for the Tempura prawns, which consisted of four crispy prawn tails that were served with a garlic honey aioli and a fresh lemon wedge – all beautifully laid out on a signature On Sixth tray.

Surpassing my expectations, I was hooked and wished I could have had a second serving.

Thando chose the calamari tubes, also served with a garlic honey aioli and fresh lemon.

“Delicious, flavourful and well seasoned” are some of the words Thando used to share her thoughts on the meal.

“The sauce is out of this world,” she said.

My main course was a 250g The On Sixth Way, beef fillet.

The succulent fillet was grilled to perfection, topped with avo and cream cheese; a pleasant surprise for my taste buds.

To add contrast to my meaty choice, Thando ordered the Farm-Inn, a linguine pasta with a creamy mustard chicken and bacon.

“The creamy sauce was really nice and rich; the pasta was well cooked it was really tasty,” said Thando.

Our meal would not be complete without some dessert and, of course, I chose the crispy, freshly baked On Sixth Belgian Waffles with syrup and ice cream.

Thando went for the traditional favourite, the chocolate brownie.

“It’s really rich and chocolaty, sweet and edible; the nuts complemented the brownie perfectly,” Thando said.

“It was sweet, but not enough to put you off.”

As food lovers, we were thoroughly impressed with our meals and the selection of wine and the friendly staff who made sure we were taken care of.

Our evening concluded with us enjoying a cup of hot chocolate, while having a great chat with the co-owner, Kirsty McVie. KM
