Bogus lawyer arrested

Police have arrested a man who was pretending to be a lawyer at the Benoni Police Station.

The arrest was made on May 12, at around 4pm.

Benoni SAPS spokesperson Lieut Nomsa Sekele said it is alleged that the man has been spotted more than once at the station, pretending to be visiting someone in the cells.

“According to the complainant, the man was willing to assist her as she wanted to visit her husband, who is in the cells,” said Sekele.

“The 42-year-old man told her that no visitors are allowed, but he would make a plan for her to see her husband for a small fee.”

Sekele added that the victim gave the man money and he pretended to be taking down her details.

“He then left the victim in the Client Service Centre and walked out of the station,” she said.

“The victim alerted the police, and little did the man know or realise that he was being watched by a police officer, who then followed him.”

Police chased after the suspect and arrested him.

He will appear in the Benoni Magistrates Court on May 16.
